In the winter of 1973 low fuel and bad weather caused the pilots to ditch their McDonnel/Douglas DC-3 on the haunting and other worldly beach in Sólheimasandur, Iceland. All of the pilots and crew survived the plane crash. There were some salvage attempts, but the wreckage was eventually abandoned.
The black sand beach contributes to the bizarre experience of viewing and climbing on this wreckage. You will swear you are on another planet as you look in each direction only to find water or black lava sand. It’s truly a beautiful and haunting place. Bring your Brennivin to celebrate!
